چکیده
The objective of this study was to evaluate body composition in small breeds of dogs as compared with larger breeds. Body composition by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) was performed in 34 adult small and toy breed dogs. Results were compared with data obtained from 41 Beagles and 6 Labrador retrievers. Body weight, bone density, total calcium, fat grams, lean grams and bone mineral content were significantly lower in small dogs than in larger breed dogs, which were directly related to their body size. However, small dogs showed a higher percentage of bone and lean tissue, and lower percentage of fat tissue relative to larger breed dogs. Age, gender and reproductive status may influence the differences seen in these parameters and warrants further study.
